Press Releases

Spontaneous Realism painter Ces Lecaroz holds her first solo exhibit at the Gateway Gallery from May 12 to 26, 2018. Entitled “Spontanrealismus Lecaroz,” the opening reception takes place on May 12, Satruday, at 6:00 pm. Lecaroz, a former anchor of ABS-CBN News Channel, has participated in major group exhibits since 2016. These include shows mounted by the Philippine Embassy in Washington, DC, Grupo Sining Batangueño in Batangas City, Miriam College alumnae, Ateneo Alumni Art Fair, University of Santo Tomas Museum, SM Stationery Art Fest, and the Philippine Pastel Artists, Inc. One of her most significant works is a set of Jones Memorial Bridge paintings that she personally turned over to the Richmond County Museum in Washington DC, as a gift of the Philippine government to celebrate the 100th year of the Jones Act for Philippine Independence. Ambassador John D. Negroponte described the paintings as a "stunning modern rendition of the Jones Bridge... a reflection of bonds that connected our countries in common purpose over a 100 years."

Lecaroz’ career in art germinated with an  adult coloring book, gifted to her by a sister-in-law. She turned out to be a very good colorist and was in fact energized by it. After that experience, within two years, her art career took eventful twists and turns. Currently, her style favors the modern realist figuration, specifically done in the spontaneous style. Art history tells us that this sytle “borrows its features” from other art movements like Fauvism, Expressionism, Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art. For her first show at Gateway Gallery, Lecaroz shows her dexterity in combining these art styles. She is able to demonstrate the features and techniques of these generative styles. It is a style becoming more common among “younger artists” nowadays, be it here or abroad. In the Philippines, Lecaroz is expected to be a strong proponent of this style in the immediate future. For this show, she accomplishes mostly large acrylic gestural portraits of public personalities that she admires such as Nick Joaquin, NVM Gonzalez, Milan Kundera, Ernest Hemingway, the Dalai Lama, Manuel L. Quezon, and others. They came alive, exposed in a new light, with the strong and colorful strokes of Lecaroz

Dubbed as the Most Beautiful Night in the Philippines, the country’s premier beauty pageant drew a massive audience in support of their favorite candidates that they hope would represent the country in international competitions. The excitement surrounding this batch of candidates was at its highest, and this led to the biggest number of ticket sales for the coronation night to date.

With a bigger stage comprised of multiple stairs and landings, and dressed with LED monitors and lighted acrylic trimmings, it was one of the most striking presentations of the prestigious pageant, befitting the most beautiful women in the country. The Big Dome was filled with hordes of fans with lighted signs and letters spelling out their chosen candidates’ names; some even came with whistles and other paraphernalia to cheer their favorites on.

It was a night of frontrunner triumphs and interesting revelations when the judges finally announced the new Queens. The appreciative audience cheered for 2nd Runner-up Samantha Bernardo and 1st Runner-up Vickie Rushton; they made a lot of noise when the new queens were called: Karen Gallman was named this year’s Binibining Pilipinas Intercontinental; Michele Gumabao, Binibining Pilipinas Globe; Eva Patalinjug, Binibining Pilipinas Grand International; Jehza Mae Huelar, Binibining Pilipinas Supranational; and Ahtisa Manalo, Binibining Pilipinas International.

But the loudest cheers erupted when favorite Catriona Gray was named this year’s Miss Philippines Universe. The Fil-Australian beauty who represents Albay had described joining this year’s competition as nerve-wracking. Her vocal and very passionate fans, collectively known as Catrionians, feel she is ripe to bring home a fourth Miss Universe title after Pia Wurtzbach.

“The Binibini fans are wonderful,” say Mrs. Stella Marquez Araneta, Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc. chair. “They give so much love to the ladies; their support really boosts the candidates’ confidence, and sees them thru the trying periods in this competition. We will not be able to keep doing this without them.”

The new Queens are now busy doing media interviews and other Binibini-related appearances. Catch more of them on the official Binibining Pilipinas Facebook page (@realbbpilipinas) and the official website. For pageant fanatics, the Binibining Pilipinas 2018 souvenir magazine is also being sold at the Snaxx counter of Gateway Cineplex, 4th level, Gateway Mall.

On January 23, the candidates went to the Gateway Gallery to learn more about the country’s history through the exhibit "SiningSaysay: Philippine History in Art." The exhibit, which features 30 large-scale paintings from pre-historic Philippines to the contemporary period, is a joint project of the Araneta Center and UP Alumni Association. "SiningSaysay" aims to promote art appreciation while teaching history.

John Ray Ramos, history professor and founder of the advocacy group Proyekto, discussed with the Binibinis the significant events depicted in the paintings and emphasized the important role of Filipinas in shaping Philippine history.

The candidates also tried Gateway Gallery's digital feature called "SiningLakbay: Philippine History in Augmented Reality," the first AR exhibit in the country. By simply downloading the free app on IOS or Android on their phones, the ladies were able to watch videos and listen to narrations on Philippine history via select paintings in the exhibit.

In the afternoon of January 31, the candidates bonded with their fellow aspiring beauty queens as they pose and take photos with interactive paintings at the Art in Island Interactive 3D Art Museum. Aside from marveling at the fantastic displays at the biggest 3D art museum in Asia, the Binibinis also got to see the museum's latest attraction—projection mapped performances, which combine interactive 3D paintings with interactive projection.

With all the fantastic displays and features at the Gateway Gallery and Art in Island Museum, the candidates surely had a blast spending their afternoons at the art hubs around the Araneta Center.

The Araneta Center grounds will turn festive on Saturday, March 10, when the 40 official candidates of Binibining Pilipinas 2018 take part in the annual Parade of Beauties at 4pm.

This is the chance for eager fans and appreciative pedestrians to see the ladies up close as they make their way from Kia Theater to Ali Mall via Gen. Aguinaldo Avenue. The parade then goes out to P. Tuazon Boulevard, back to the Center and will head out to EDSA via Gen. McArthur Avenue, then to Aurora Boulevard, and back to the Center passing in front of Gateway Tower via Gen. Aguinaldo.

The parade will end at the Gateway Mall pavilion beside Smart Araneta Coliseum, where the ladies will re-introduce themselves to fans and media, and do more photo ops.

The summer heat surely has nothing on the Binibinis, whose beauty, smiles, and amiable personalities are enough to melt everyone’s hearts. Find out which of your favorites will truly sizzle in this last pre-pageant activity for the Binibinis.

The 40 official candidates of Binibining Pilipinas 2018 scintillated members of the media and sponsors during their Press Presentation on February 21, Wednesday, at the Novotel Manila Araneta Center.

Wearing their swimsuits, the gorgeous women competing in the country’s most prestigious beauty pageant wowed the guests with their beautiful physique and winsome personality as they introduced themselves and posed for photos at the hotel’s pool area.

The roster of aspirants this year is composed of registered professionals, flight attendants, entrepreneurs, public personalities, models, students and pageant veterans all vying for the chance to represent the Philippines in international beauty tilts. They are the cream of the crop, having been chosen by the Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. executive committee led by chairperson Mrs. Stella Marquez Araneta in a rigorous screening process.

Reigning queens Miss Universe Philippines Rachel Peters, Binibining Pilipinas International Mariel de Leon, Miss Intercontinental first runner up Katarina Rodriguez, Miss Globe first runner up Nelda Ibe, Miss Grand International second runner up Elizabeth Clenci, and Binibining Pilipinas Supranational Chanel Olive Thomas also graced the event and got to share some valuable tips to the candidates.

With less than a month to go before the Coronation Night, the candidates are in for more exciting and meaningful activities, and tougher competition as the Philippines aims to further live up to its powerhouse status in international pageants.

One of the most important aspects of the Binibinis’ journey is doing charity work, something that the organization has always made sure the ladies experience. Their most recent activity took all 40 candidates to the AFP Medical Center in V. Luna to spend some time with honorable wounded soldiers. With the help of the Makati Medical Center Foundation, the ladies brought cheer to the soldiers at the Heroes Ward by distributing food, clothes and toiletries. They also took time to interact with the soldiers and their families.

Pageant fans and followers will also get a chance to catch the ladies in the National Costume Competition at the Kia Theatre on March 3, and see them up close in the much-awaited annual Parade of Beauties, slated on March 10 at the Araneta Center grounds.

Join the ladies on their journey that culminates on Coronation Night, March 18, Sunday, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. For tickets to the National Costume Competition, and the Coronation Night, visit www.ticketnet.com.ph or call 911-5555.

Philippine representative Katarina Rodriguez made the Philippines proud her first runner up finish at the Miss Intercontinental pageant held in Hurghada, Egypt on Thursday, January 25 (Manila time).

Katarina wowed the judges with her impressive performance in the swimsuit and evening gown portions. Proving that she has both form and substance, she garnered tremendous applause during the question and answer portion when she said that she was inspired by the Arabic word “meraki” and that the greatest lesson she learned while participating in the pageant was “to do all things with soul, passion and creativity.”

As the top Asian candidate in the competition, Katarina was also named Miss Intercontinental Asia and Oceania. Katarina also placed in the top 3 of the pageant’s online poll.

In a Facebook video posted by Miss Intercontinental, Katarina said, teary-eyed, “Okay lang ito. I miss all of you. I miss my country. It was a tough ride – it was a lot of work, a lot of hours. Mabuhay! Mahal kita!”

Mexico’s Veronica Salas was adjudged Miss Intercontinental 2017. Rounding up the Top 6 were the Netherlands’ Cathelijne Heppenhuis, Brazil’s Amanda Cardoso, Colombia’s Lizeth Villanueva, and online poll winner Lee Su Jin of Korea.

Katarina, whose advocacies include peace and HIV-Aids awareness, duplicated the first runner up finish of 2015 Philippine bet Christi Lynn McGarry. Last year’s representative, Jennifer Hammond, placed in the Top 15.

Katarina, along with the other Binibining Pilipinas 2017 queens, proved the Philippines remains a powerhouse in the pageant world. Nelda Ibe won first runner up in Miss Globe. Elizabeth Clenci placed second runner up in Miss Grand International. Rachel Peters and Chanel Olive Thomas emerged in the Top 10 of Miss Universe and Miss Supranational, respectively.

The Philippines has so far continued to enjoy success in the international pageant scene in 2017, and Binibining Pilipinas Intercontinental Katarina Rodriguez is hoping to give the country one more crown.

Currently in Egypt for the Miss Intercontinental competition, Katarina is determined to give the country its first ever Miss Intercontinental title.  And Filipinos around the world can help her get closer to that dream by voting for her in the pageant’s online poll prior to the coronation night on January 24 (January 25, Manila time).

Netizens just have to go to http://www.missintercontinental.com/voting-miss-intercontinental-2017/ and select Katarina and two other contestants for their votes to count. Voting ends on January 23, 9 p.m. (Egypt time, around 3 a.m. of January 24 in Manila). The winner of the online poll will automatically advance to the final stage of the competition.

Araneta Center is letting the dogs out and about a few weeks before the Chinese calendar’s Year of the Dog with the Philippine Circuit 2018. Considered Asia’s biggest dog show, the event will be held at the Araneta Coliseum from January 18, Thursday, to 21, Sunday.

More than 500 dogs from all over the world are expected to prove their mettle in the four-day show. Of these, 160 come from 21 other countries in four different continents, promising an impressive showcase of diverse dog breeds.

Augusto Benedicto Santos III, president of organizer Philippine Canine Club, Inc. (PCCI), said that the shows will open the eyes of the Filipino public to “a whole new world of dog breeds.”

“We have the cream of the crop coming (to the Philippines),” Santos said. “Those who come here, come here to win.”

Aside from the common dog breeds we have all come to love, other unique dogs included in the shows are monkey terriers, French bulldogs, bichons, Australian cattle dogs, and borzois.

The dogs are judged based on the standards of their breeds. Their appearance and movements are the factors considered by the judges.

This is the Philippine Circuit’s seventh year overall and third consecutive year at the Araneta Coliseum. The number of foreign entries is at its record high this year.

While foreign dog breeders used to dominate the competition in years past, Santos said Filipino breeders have started to catch up.

“That’s the advantage of being able to compete with other dog breeders. The Filipino dog breeders are starting to do well,” Santos said.

The Philippine Circuit is sure to be a treat for dog lovers, owners, breeders and trainers. While registration for the breeders is already closed, the event is open to the public. Admission is free! There will also be a photo booth inside the Araneta Coliseum where the public can take pictures and interact with their favorite dogs.
